Cheri Berrens
Dennis, MA USA
"...Cheri Berrens, the transplanted LA dancer with 20+ years experience (though she only looks 20+ years old), who now lives and teaches on Cape Cod... [She] is starting new classes in Dennis, MA the week of June 4th 1996. The classes are: Beginners Wed 7pm, Intermediates Tues 7pm. She teaches in 1 month blocks, (4) classes. She then takes a 1-2 week break to take care of her inn and then starts up again. Cheri also gives private lessons. Her barn studio makes the most content person green. She has an amazing collection of old belly dance albums, oriental rugs, and antiques. She also hosts occasional workshops. I've attended a costume workshop, a veil workshop, and a middle eastern rhythm workshop. She is unbelievable on zills and also plays a mean dumbek! I can't say enough about Cheri. If anyone saw the community access cable show "The Spirit of Dance" that featured Cheri you would know what I mean. To find out class info give Cheri a call and leave your name, number and address. She will send you a class flyer with directions and all that." --Kalina

Goddess Dancing
Boston, MA USA
Costumer and teacher. I teach in a very fluid, ethnic style, and I do not push students to perform if they don't want to. Men are welcome, as well. Classes are $5 a session or $20 for five. Currently, classes are Monday evenings, 7-9. I am always willing to travel or start a new class. Currently in Concord (50 min from Boston, MA). Her website features pictures of costuming and ordering info, plus info about her teaching.

"We are a group of women creating sacred dance, drawing our movement style mainly from the Middle East and our inspiration from the goddess archetypes and myths of many cultures. We dance to honor the feminine aspect of the Divine, to celebrate the cycles of women's lives, and to express the Goddess within our hearts. Our dances enact myths, depict goddesses and mortal women, tell stories, and portray a community of women in supportive and loving relationship with each other. We perform Belly Dance in the spirit we believe it was done in ancient times: as a dance about birth and the power of women, performed by priestesses in the temples of the goddesses. We have been performing, teaching, and creating ritual dance in the Boston area since 1991." They're having a belly dance retreat July 1996 in Deerfield, MA. Call Lorrain at 617-721-0001.

Offer a variety of dance disciplines as well as self-defense, which include: Belly Dancing, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern, Country Western, Social Ballroom, Flamenco, Celtic or traditional Irish Dance, Ju-Jutsu Self Defense, and Arabic Drum classes. We have a staff of 14 teachers. We have three suites that have been combined into two dance areas. We can hold two classes simutaneoulsy. We have five dance troupe that perform throughout Las Vegas. They are: The Al As Har Egyptian Belly Dancers; The Golden Tappers; The Youth Musical Theater Dancers; Corals Flamenco Troupe; and the Celtic Dancers.

In 1975, Jasmine Gamal formed the Al As Har Belly Dancers. We have toured Egypt and Europe three times since we have begun. We have also, entered National Competitions in Dance. For example, at a competition held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, our dancers took First Place in costumeing (out of 900 groups performing from all over the World, from Australia to Japan). We also took first place in that particular dance. Our goal was to uplift Middle Eastern Dance to a "legitimate" dance form, competing with jazz, ballet, tap, modern, etc. We have been very successful and I am very proud of our dancers. We perform for conventions and convalescent homes alike. What we do, is share who we are and the great potential we have to enlighten the lives of others.
